Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, sent by God to dwell within believers, guide them into truth, and empower them for righteous living. Throughout Scripture, the Holy Spirit is depicted as a comforter, teacher, and the source of spiritual gifts given to the church. From creation to Pentecost and beyond, the Spirit of God plays a central and active role in God's redemptive plan for humanity.
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
Jesus is telling his followers that after he is gone, God will send a helper called the Holy Spirit — think of it as a divine guide living within people. This Spirit acts like a teacher and a reminder, helping people understand and remember the important lessons Jesus shared during his life.
“All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”
This verse describes a remarkable moment when a group of Jesus's early followers suddenly received the Holy Spirit and were able to speak in languages they had never learned before. It shows that the Holy Spirit is described as a powerful force that can dramatically change and empower people from the inside out.
“You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.”
Paul is drawing a contrast between living driven purely by selfish, physical desires versus living guided by the Spirit of God — which Christians believe is the Holy Spirit dwelling inside a person. According to this verse, having the Holy Spirit living within you is what defines someone as a follower of Christ, making it a core part of Christian identity.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,”
This passage lists nine positive qualities — like love, joy, patience, and kindness — that Christians believe naturally develop in a person's character when the Holy Spirit is active in their life. The idea is that the Holy Spirit works like a gardener tending a tree, and these good qualities are the fruit that grows as a result.
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;”
Paul is telling people that their physical bodies are not just ordinary containers, but are considered sacred dwelling places — like a temple — for the Holy Spirit. This means Christians believe the Holy Spirit actually lives inside each person who follows Christ, which gives their body a deep spiritual significance and calls them to treat it with respect.
“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”
Jesus describes the Holy Spirit as the 'Spirit of truth' — a guide that will lead people toward a full understanding of what is real and true, rather than speaking its own agenda. This verse presents the Holy Spirit as a trustworthy inner compass that points people toward truth and even offers insight about things that haven't happened yet.
